Florence’s Duomo is certainly the most grandiose church in town. Its dome ecplipses evry other city church. However, places of worship in Florence are innumerable and so are the breathtaking masterpieces.
The major as well as the less known churches in Florence should all be in your don’t-miss list once here. Whether you are a believer or not, Florence churches offer much more than the religious angle: timeless artworks, courtyards, secret crypts, stories of wealthy laymen and illustrious citizens. For instance, the Basilica of Santa Croce is very famous for its many artworks and the tombs of some of the most illustrious Italians, like Michelangelo or Galileo. Another stunning example of the city’s refined religious architecture is the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and its innumerable art treasures.
Other breathtaking Florence churches are the Basilica of San Lorenzo (the Medici’s burial place), Santo Spirito (with its grandiose interior), San Marco (and the timeless frescoes by Fra Angelico), Santa Maria del Carmine (with its wonderful Brancacci Chapel, one the jewels of the Renaissance) or the Basilica of San Miniato (and its medieval and mystical atmosphere). All these places are worth a visit, not to mention the “minor” parish churches the city is also famous for. It is impossible to see all of them on the same day, anyhow we have tailored a specific tour to highlight the top churches in Florence during a relaxing walk that also reveals the city and its alleys, palazzos and piazzas.
